Every map becomes a document.

Synaptica's Cosmo View 3D: ideas as celestial bodies linked by orbits

The workflow

Collect everything in one workspace

Web pages, PDFs, audio and video transcripts (whisper, locally): every source enters the archive and stays citable forever.

Connect ideas, not just lists

Hierarchical Plan View 2D maps and the spatial Cosmo View 3D; labelled links between distant nodes and semantic search across everything you have collected.

Write with your sources at hand

Documents linked to the map, numbered citations in one click, Markdown and JSON export — and, with PRO, PDF with bibliography.

Local by choice

No account, no tracking. The AI runs with your own keys (Ollama, LM Studio, OpenAI and others) and your data never leaves your computer.

From collected data to the finished document

Installation and first launch

Windows

  1. Download the .msi file and double-click it.
  2. If the “Windows protected your PC” window appears, choose More info and then Run anyway.
  3. Follow the installer: Synaptica will appear in the Start menu.

macOS

Which file to download: aarch64 for Macs with an Apple chip (M1 and later), x64 for Intel Macs.

  1. Open the .dmg and drag Synaptica into Applications.
  2. On first launch macOS blocks the app (“cannot be verified”). How to proceed, depending on your macOS version:
    • macOS 14 (Sonoma) and earlier: right-click Synaptica → Open → confirm with “Open”.
    • macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later: once blocked, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the Synaptica warning and press Open Anyway.
    • From Terminal (any version): xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Synaptica.app
  3. You only need this on the first launch.

This is the first version of Synaptica released for macOS: if anything looks wrong, write to hello@synaptica.fyi — your reports guide the fixes.

Why a security warning appears

The Windows and macOS installers of this version are not signed. The warning means the publisher is not verified: that verification is a certification Microsoft and Apple issue through their own commercial programs. What the warning means is “unknown publisher”, not “harmful file”.

The integrity of what you download can be verified by anyone, with no middleman: the SHA-256 fingerprint of every file is published in the Checksums section of this page, together with the commands to compare it against the downloaded file.

Frequently asked questions

Do my documents end up on some server?
No. Synaptica is local-first: maps, sources, documents and indexes live in a database on your computer. The only exception is PRO sync, encrypted end-to-end on storage you choose and own — not even we can read it.
What do I need to use the AI?
A key from a provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq and others), or a local model with Ollama or LM Studio. The key stays in the app and reaches only the provider you choose: requests pass through their servers, but your data does not.
What about transcription? Does the audio go to the cloud?
No: transcription runs whisper locally on your computer. The free plan includes 120 minutes a month; PRO is unlimited.
What happens when the PRO license expires?
The app goes back to the free plan: nothing is deleted and nothing is locked to read-only. All your data remains yours, to consult and edit.
Can I use Synaptica on more than one device?
Yes, with PRO: sync is end-to-end encrypted and travels over storage you own (WebDAV or S3: Nextcloud, MinIO, any compatible provider). The encryption passphrase stays on your devices only.
How do I receive the license after buying?
By email, moments after payment: paste it into the app's License panel and you are PRO. Lost the key? Ask for it again from the same email address and we will send it back.
